Determined to include an ensuite as part of their house renovations, Balwyn North couple Tony and Stacey Antonopoulos are suitably pleased with the result of their new bathroom. The ensuite was developed by Melbourne designer Royston Wilson in conjunction with bathroomware supplier Caroma Dorf, creating a romantic and modern bathroom that delivers all modern amenities despite a space of just two metres by three.

Stylish, waterproof, practical and durable are all properties to look for in a bathroom floor. But don’t be afraid to think outside the square – the range of flooring options and prices is endless and the right one will go a long way towards creating your dream space. While ceramic tiles are the most popular bathroom option, there are also porcelain tiles which have a lovely sheen, and stone tiles which have a natural texture. While porcelain and stone are more expensive, their durability and ease of cleaning is sure to be a plus, and they’re less likely to break than ceramic.

Our tired old bathroom was outdated and cluttered, and we knew it needed a serious renovation to bring it up to date and to suit our lifestyle. We’ve gone for a simple minimalist style through the whole house and felt the bathroom should be an extension of that. We wanted a strong look that wouldn’t date and fittings that would still be working well in 10 years. We chose the dark brown and white because the contrast gave a dramatic touch and although it’s distinctive it’s still neutral, so we can change the accent colours to get a different look when we want it.

Before Bett and Barry’s four-bedroom home in Ocean Grove, Victoria, was renovated, it had only one small bathroom. “It was fine just for us, but things got very crowded when the children and grandchildren visited,” Bett recalls. As part of the total renovation, an ensuite was added to the master bedroom and the main bathroom got a complete overhaul, including a structural modification. Originally, the toilet could be seen from the study so a wall was erected just inside the bathroom’s entrance to fix this as well as create a more private feel for the room.

When it came to creating their children’s bathroom, Jason and Odette decided to keep things simple. Ten years ago Odette and Jason bought a property in Helensburgh just south of Sydney, an area they’ve always loved. The block of land had nothing but a one-bedroom miner’s cottage, which they demolished and then started from scratch. All the construction work was actually done by Jason, who runs the company Modline Building. “He did all the design and building for the whole home,” says Odette who has her own interior design business, ODM Design, and was responsible for the interiors.

Caroma Dorf accepted Ian Moore’s challenge that, as in all of his architectural projects, there would be no differentiation between the most luxurious and the most utilitarian bathrooms. Material and detail would be treated equally, with scale being the only difference. Aurélie Toulemonde talked to Ian to find out more.
