Minimal Beach Chic
This project was a major renovation of a beautiful home that required the conversion of its existing open deck into an outside room fit for summer soirees.
In updating the space, Paul Uhlmann Architects needed to provide adequate protection from the prevailing southerly winds as well as shade from the harsh Australian sun and privacy from adjoining homes. Some of the features requested were a spacious outdoor kitchen and bar facilities, which were incorporated on one side of the room while the other half was separated for lounging in relaxation.
The grey protrusion from the ceiling is the lower roof, which provides weather protection. The higher sections allow the space to have windows to the west which is especially important for eastern-facing decks that don’t receive afternoon sunlight.
The windows on each side of the walls feature large adjustable aluminium louvre blades which are great for providing privacy and wind protection. We’ve also ensured this room can be equally attractive in the cooler months with a gas fireplace concealed in the centre of the lounge area.
The coastal palette of sky blues, off-whites, beige, grey and walnut-coloured timber reflects the home’s location and offers a suitable backdrop to the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Since 1997 Paul Uhlmann Architects has cultivated a reputation for award-winning commercial and residential design. Here, Paul talks about a beachside home that called for a stunning outdoor entertaining area to suit its amazing location.
