The first time I went to my friend Kathryn’s home I was expecting big things – not only does she have the most amazing taste and is a stylist for Modern Home and Home Ideas, but her house is located on the coast, overlooking the Tasman Sea.
Stepping inside, it was everything I expected and more. The resort-like entrance opened up to reveal an interior with a stunning white, beige and black colour palette.
As I was given the grand tour, I fell in love with every piece, from the stunning driftwood sculptures and perfectly coordinated cushions to the beautiful woven floor rugs and the silver and black table lamps, everything looked so … expensive.
After biting my lip for a while I couldn’t contain myself any longer and blurted out “How did you afford all of this?” As quick as a whip she replied “It was all really cheap, I looked around for bargains and didn’t jump at the first thing I saw!” She had a point; too often people make the assumption that to get a certain look and afford beautiful things you have to spend a lot of money, when in fact this is not the case at all.
As Kathryn showed me around the house again, she pointed out where all the items I had been eyeing came from, and when she remembered, she mentioned the price too. IKEA, Freedom, Domayne, Target and more – everything was from popular chain stores!
Those driftwood sculptures were from Freedom, most of the cushions were picked up at Spotlight and Target, while the woven rugs were a steal at $189 each from IKEA and those divine silver and black lamps were $80 each from Domayne.
Simply put, you don’t need to spend a lot to make your home beautiful. Investing in quality furniture is always a good idea, but when it comes to decorating all you need is a good eye and a plan!
