The Right Stuff Underfoot

Stylish, waterproof, practical and durable are all properties to look for in a bathroom floor. But don’t be afraid to think outside the square – the range of flooring options and prices is endless and the right one will go a long way towards creating your dream space. While ceramic tiles are the most popular bathroom option, there are also porcelain tiles which have a lovely sheen, and stone tiles which have a natural texture. While porcelain and stone are more expensive, their durability and ease of cleaning is sure to be a plus, and they’re less likely to break than ceramic. Natural stone requires sealing, so factor that into the cost. Take care to choose tiles that won’t be too slippery when wet – there’s nothing worse than falling in your bathroom. If you’re worried about cold feet, timber is now a practical option too. Hardwood floors look great in kitchens and bathrooms, as long as there’s not too much water on the ground. Specially treated for wet areas, wood floors are highly durable and can be used to create effects that can’t be achieved with any other material. They blend nicely with wooden cabinetry or create a stunning contrast – and there’s nothing better to capture the effect of a spa! Vinyl is another fantastic way to dress up a bathroom floor and add some colour too. Whether in sheet or tile form, this floor covering is a breeze to clean and there’s no problem coping with bathtime splashes. It’s also a very cost-friendly choice. It’s only drawback comes from placing heavy objects on it, since it dents easily and can be hard to repair. If you’re looking for an incredible easy-to-clean, durable floor, then you can’t go past polished concrete. This modern flooring option is stunning to look at, easy to mop up, won’t be damaged and stands up to moisture well. And, with no grout or joins to trap moisture, mould is a thing of the past. It can be cold underfoot in the winter months though, so consider under-floor heating. Laid directly into the slab during installation, it’s an economical luxury that makes bathtime bliss.
