Small Space Big Ideas

Determined to include an ensuite as part of their house renovations, Balwyn North couple Tony and Stacey Antonopoulos are suitably pleased with the result of their new bathroom. The ensuite was developed by Melbourne designer Royston Wilson in conjunction with bathroomware supplier Caroma Dorf, creating a romantic and modern bathroom that delivers all modern amenities despite a space of just two metres by three. A truly beautiful marble was selected for the vanity countertop, which was neutral in colour but more daring with its pattern and texture, thereby meeting Tony and Stacey’s brief of ‘neutral yet strong’. The same stone was used on the floor and up onto the feature wall, which can be glimpsed from the bedroom, creating a real impact. Stretching across the length of the vanity, a custommade mirror with a delicately ornate frame bounces light and life around the space while providing a soft, romantic feel. The three-light chandelier in the corner enhances the room in two ways: by adding to the ambience of the space with its style, and – importantly – by forming part of a focal point from the doorway. According to designer Royston Wilson, “With the bathroom’s position off the entrance to the walk-in robe, glimpses of the ensuite can be caught from the bedroom. The importance of layout and creating the essence of this bathroom in that fleeting glimpse came into play in the final design, especially considering the space we had to work with.”

The modern Fowler Seido Icon II™ wall-faced suite was included in the bathroom for its smooth, clean lines and elegant buttons. The suite saves space through the use of a concealed cistern, with only modern push-button technology visible on the wall. A walk-in shower was installed but instead of the glass forming a square block in the design, it was cut on the angle, allowing the space to appear lighter and roomier. The stylish Dorf Arc rail shower with overhead and hand sprays offers minimalist style with an adjustable head, and reduces water usage without compromising on performance, achieving a 3-star WELS rating. The straight lines and curved edges of the Dorf Arc tapware and Dorf Motif accessories complete the designer look. A double vanity was selected and installed to allow both husband and wife to get ready at their own pace. With modern styling and simplicity, the Fowler Regent semi-recessed basins combine space-saving design with a generous bowl capacity. Their modern design and clean lines create a resort feel in the bathroom. Royston added, “Peace reigns supreme in this ensuite where the ebb and flow of daily life is catered for through thoughtful design. The bathroom achieves its romantic, and neutral yet adventurous feel. “The end result is an ensuite that’s not palatial in size but is stylish and functional. There is always a balancing act with space. In this case, the ensuite could have felt tight and cramped, but doesn’t, due to the clever incorporation of space-saving fittings, light through the use of a large mirror, an external window and the chandelier,” he concluded.
